Currency

The peso is the Mexican form of currency. It is suggested that you exchange small amounts of U.S. dollars for pesos. Major credit cards are also widely accepted. A pocket calculator can also be helpful when you shop to help convert U. S. dollars to pesos. Bartering when shopping outside of the resort areas is practiced. U.S. dollars are accepted in the resort areas but keep in mind any change that is due back will be in pesos. One recommendation is to use a credit card which will present the daily currency exchange on your next billing statement.

Language

Spanish is the official language. English is also widely spoken in the hotel areas.

Proof of Citizenship

Acceptable forms of proof of citizenship for U.S. citizens traveling between the U.S. and our International Destinations are a valid passport, OR a certified , state issued birth certificate with raised seal AND a valid government photo ID, a naturalization/citizenship certificate, Armed Forces' ID or discharge papers stating place of birth. It is the traveler's responsibility to provide proper documentation. Married women traveling with any documentation in their maiden name must supply a marriage license (a copy is acceptable).

How do I get around?

Over the water! A ferry to Playa del Carmen on Tulum Coast is available almost every 2 hours.

Cozumel is just a ferry ride away from Cancun on Mexico. s mainland. Ferry rides are easy to catch and take approximately 45 to 60 minutes one way. The tours listed below are available in Cancun so be prepared to travel the Caribbean Sea!

Coba & Kantenah (Cancun)
Discovered just 30 years ago, Coba is the biggest Mayan ruin not totally uncovered. The Nohoch-Mul (the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula), is a magnificent Mayan treasure. With its frescoes and lagoon, it compares with the beautiful ruins of Chichen-Itza. After viewing the ruins of Coba, enjoy a full lunch at Kantenah Bay, relax in the hammocks, swim in the fresh-water swimming pool or snorkel in one of the best spots.

Scuba Diving
The beautiful reef system, all 20 miles of it, is located on the western coast of the island. This is also where most of the hotels and attractions can be found. There are 17 dive sites that offer a wide variety of sites and experiences since the water depth varies. Some of the more famous reef formations in Cozumel include Palancar, Santa Rosa, Columbia and Tormentos.

Due to the undercurrent in the reef, Cozumel provides drift diving. This special form of diving allows divers to effortlessly explore as the current pulls them through the National Marine Park. With an average water temperature of 80^o (Fahrenheit), just imagine how relaxing this experience is.

For your dive, everything you could possibly need is available in Cozumel and is considered to be affordable. Once you arrive, check into gear rental, dive groups with boats and of course lessons.

Snorkeling
Don't worry if you're not ready to try scuba diving -- snorkeling will allow you to view first hand the amazing reef system.  Ride through the channels of the Nichupte Lagoon in a glass bottom boat and snorkel at the Punta Nizuc Reef or dive without scuba gear and experience the Caribbean beneath the waves on board the Atlantis Submarine.
